Nurturing the Minds: Accelerating Nature-Based Entrepreneurship in Bhutan
In June 2025, a cohort of 15 promising entrepreneurs from across Bhutan embarked on a transformative journey through the Nature-Based Accelerator Program—an initiative of the Department of Employment and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, in collaboration with the College of Natural Resources (CNR).
The five-day program brought together early-stage entrepreneurs in agriculture, livestock, and forestry with a single mission: to equip them with the tools, knowledge, and networks to grow sustainable, market-ready enterprises while safeguarding Bhutan’s environment.
“This program has been incredibly valuable in enhancing our entrepreneurial knowledge, building networks, and understanding sustainable practices that can drive growth in our natural resource-based enterprises. The exposure to real-life case studies and interactive mentoring helped us see the bigger picture of how to grow and sustain our agri-businesses while protecting the environment.”

Hands-on Learning, Real-World Solutions
The program adopted a “learning by doing” approach. Entrepreneurs conducted SWOT, Force Field, and Fishbone analyses, mapped their Business Model Canvas, and identified operational gaps. Working alongside technical specialists, they co-developed tailored strategies to improve productivity, branding, and market access.
Industry mentors and financial experts provided insights on digital marketing, brand positioning, and product testing, while local banks evaluated business pitches during a dynamic Demo Day—offering real-time investor feedback and financial guidance.
From Ideas to Impact
By the program’s conclusion, participants had refined, market-ready business models and actionable growth plans. Three ventures stood out for their pitch quality and scalability:
- Berti Ecolodge (Zhemgang)
- Thungzom Livelihood Agro (Haa)
- Rainbow Trout (Chukha)
These winners—and many others—left with renewed confidence, strengthened networks, and concrete plans to enhance packaging, access new markets, and improve supply chain efficiency.
A Call for More
For many, the program was more than training—it was a turning point.
“Nature-Based Accelerator was truly outstanding and unlike any other. I highly recommend similar programs be held in other regions like Sarpang, Chhukha, and Dagana. If extended to 10–12 days, it could allow deeper engagement and greater focus on product development,” shared Bal Kumar Monger, Founder, AgroNest Centrer.
The Nature-Based Accelerator has shown that when entrepreneurial passion meets structured guidance and strategic networks, sustainable businesses flourish—and with them, Bhutan’s vision for a greener, more resilient economy.
